What the ad stack actually does to a news page
Publishers are told to choose between revenue and speed. The trade is real but far smaller than it looks, and most of the damage comes from three decisions rather than from advertising itself.
Yes, and the sites that fail are usually failing on layout shift rather than on load time. Reserving the space an ad will occupy costs nothing in revenue and fixes the largest single penalty most publishers carry.
Separate the three costs
An ad stack charges you in three different currencies and they are usually discussed as one. The script itself costs main thread time. The auction costs latency before anything can render. And the slot costs layout stability if its height was never reserved.
Only the second of those is genuinely in tension with revenue. The other two are implementation choices.
- Script execution: main thread time, mostly fixable by loading order
- Auction latency: the real trade, and the one worth negotiating
- Unreserved slots: pure layout shift, and free to fix
The one that is free to fix
A slot with no reserved height pushes the article down when the creative arrives, and every reader who had started reading loses their place. That is the metric that penalises publishers hardest and it is fixed with a minimum height, not with less advertising.
The objection is that creative sizes vary. They vary within a known range, and reserving the most common size in that range removes most of the shift without giving up any inventory.
What is genuinely a trade
Header bidding adds latency before the first ad can render, and shortening the timeout costs some yield. That is a real commercial decision and it should be made by somebody who can see both numbers, which in most publishers means it is currently made by nobody.
What to take from this
- 01Most publisher failures are layout shift, not load time
- 02Reserving slot height costs no inventory and no revenue
- 03Auction timeout is the only genuine speed against yield trade
- 04Whoever owns yield and whoever owns speed have to be in one meeting
Ask the question directly
- Does lazy loading ads below the fold help?
- Considerably, and it usually costs less yield than expected because the impressions it defers are the ones least likely to be seen at all.
- Is AMP still worth considering?
- For most publishers no longer, and the same speed is now reachable on the main site with less structural cost.
